In an exciting collaboration aimed at preserving Haiti’s unique natural heritage, Fondation Capital Bank has teamed up with HNT to fund a groundbreaking project. The mission? To save from extinction, the Carossier (Attalea crassispatha) – the most endangered endemic palm in Haiti and one of the world’s most threatened palm species.
The urgency of this endeavor cannot be overstated. According to the last study of the wild population in 2001, there remains only 19 known reproductive adults 5 adult males, scattered across three geographically separated subpopulations in the southwest region of Haiti. These strikingly low numbers underscore the critical need for immediate action. Scientific evidence suggests that the very small in situ population is suffering from inbreeding depression that is further threatening the species’ chances for survival in addition to the loss of its native habitat.
The Carossier palm holds deep cultural and ecological significance for Haiti. Its fruits are harvested locally, serving as a source of sustenance for the Haitian people. Whether consumed raw, roasted, or used in confectionery, this palm tree plays a pivotal role in the lives of the communities where it is found.
The main objective of this 4-year project is the implementation of sustainable in-situ conservation activities to safeguard the Carossier from extinction and incorporate the palm in the daily lives of local communities within its original distribution.
The partnership between Fondation Capital Bank and HNT is a beacon of hope for Haiti’s biodiversity. Private sector companies and their foundations, such as Fondation Capital Bank, are stepping up to protect Haiti’s natural treasures and ensure the survival of endangered species like the Carossier. This collaboration demonstrates the immense potential of the private sector to contribute to the preservation of Haiti’s rich biodiversity, securing a greener tomorrow for generations to come.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Fondation Capital Bank for their invaluable support and financial contribution to fund the first year of this project. This generous funding will play a pivotal role in the mission to rescue the Carossier palm and, by extension, Haiti’s unique natural heritage.
In partnership with Fondation Capital Bank and the dedication of our team, we are confident that we can make a meaningful difference in the fight against extinction. Together, we are working towards a brighter, more sustainable future for Haiti’s remarkable biodiversity. Thank you, Fondation Capital Bank, for standing with us in this vital endeavor!
